On Thursday April 26, 2018, Milby High School’s engineering and welding students took on the Houston Independent School District (HISD) Construction Career Combine hosted by D. Samuels & Associates (DSA), making them the third HISD high school to take part in the construction challenge. Students were exposed to the knowledge and skills needed to work in the construction industry as they participated in a series of challenges including nail driving, problem solving, and the ability to work as a team.
"The Construction Combine has been a good exposure to construction for our students. I was thrilled to see how motivated the students were to participate in every skill,” stated Manufacturing & Welding instructor Brittney Morrison. “It’s exciting to see how their eyes have opened to the idea of construction."
DSA’s outreach continues to spread, engaging and inspiring young minds to consider construction as a career. In addition to DSA’s $1,000 donation to Milby’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, the company has plans to further empower the youth within the community by introducing the construction combine program to several other HISD schools. Later this year, the top performers from each institute will have an opportunity to represent their high school in a Construction Combine HISD Face-off.
We greatly appreciate Milby High School students and instructors Brittney Morrison, Rebecca Mondesir, Michael Redmond and Clay Stamper for their contribution and enthusiasm in the Construction Career Combine.
