Houston Youth Get a Peek into the Construction Pipeline

By dsamllc, Jun 20 2018 08:38PM

It takes a considerable amount of effort to attract young people into the construction industry, but D. Samuels & Associates (DSA) is using experiential techniques to create a robust pipeline for the future. Recently several students from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Hire Houston Youth program participated in the Houston independent School District (HISD) Construction Career Combine where they were tested on their knowledge of the industry during a creative job interview. From hammering a nail, to analyzing blueprints, students had a chance to show off their skills with a series of challenges created by D. Samuels & Associates.

“Construction is a viable career path for those who have grit and the drive to succeed in this industry, in fact, the global construction industry is expected to reach an estimated $10.5 trillion by 2023. The major drivers are increasing housing starts and rising infrastructure due to increasing urbanization and a growing population. So it is up to us to create a stronger workforce network to expose, recruit and retain adventurous adults between the ages of 18 and 25 years old who want productive and prosperous lives for themselves and their families,” said Darryl Samuels, President, D. Samuels & Associates.

“The combine was a unique way of applying our skills,” said Justin Taylor, a student from Prairie View A&M University who participated. He eventually wants to work with an architectural firm, so hands on experience will be vital for his future.

At the end of the Career Construction Combine, nearly 30 participants including Taylor were evaluated based on their skills and several were offered opportunities to meet with potential employers.

“Our team has more than 40 years of experience managing public and private construction projects. We are determined to open the doors for the next round of workers and entrepreneurs,” said Samuels. “We pride ourselves on building lives, careers and projects, one person at a time.”
