REEL LIFE, REAL BUSINESS CASE STUDY:  Get In Where You Fit In: Understanding Organizational Socialization

 

In our quest to establish a career, we sometimes take jobs and assignments without anticipating or understanding how we fit into the organization.  It can be a hit or miss.  Understanding the organizational socialization process that employers and employees go through may smooth out the bumps as we pursue career advancement.  

 

Organizational Socialization is a powerful process by which people learn the content of an organization's culture.  It affects individual behavior and helps shape and maintain the organization's culture.  Organizational socialization happens in three stages.  The product of one stage becomes the input to the next stage.  

 

Anticipatory Socialization is the first stage of socialization a person experiences.  This stage happens before a person joins an organization or takes a new job in the same organization.  The anticipatory stage builds expectations about what it is like to work for the organization.  The Entry/Encounter stage occurs after entering into the organization.  A new employee learns whether his or her expectations are consistent with the reality of organization life.  

 

Change takes place during the encounter stage, as it flows and blends into the Metamorphosis stage.  If a new employee has successfully resolved the demands of the multiple sources of socialization, he or she begins to feel comfortable in their new role.  If not, their tenure will be very short.

The Houston Independent School District Labor Compliance Program (HISD-LCP) monitored by D. Samuels & Associates, LLC is responsible for monitoring and reporting prevailing wage to meet both State and Federal labor requirements on 40 bond-funded high school projects, 18 bathroom renovations and three stadiums valued at approximately $2.2B.  We have over 800 construction subcontractors enrolled and identified an entryway for local students and residents with construction interests to work for subs-in-good-standing currently enrolled with HISD-LCP and engaged on HISD bond-funded projects.  

 

The Construction Career Combine is a one-day competitive event where participants’ (16 to 26 year-olds) employment prowess are tested through a series of construction-related activities loosely based on National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) Introduction to Construction Module skill testing requirements.  

 

Our objective is to address the immediate need of identifying, qualifying and placing unskilled and skilled workers with viable subcontractors on HISD 2012 Bond funded projects while meeting our long-term goal of enhancing the construction industry by showing participants how profitable, lucrative, and rewarding construction careers can be attained.  

 

The program is free to students and the general public.

To complete HISD construction projects safely, on-time, within budget and in compliance by assessing talent and identifying employment opportunities ensuring successful job placement.

10 booths measuring problem solving, Strength, and construction skill knowledge. Hiring contractors will evaluate and rank participant performance

Participant introduction, project presentation, careers in construction and job placement overview.

Participants will complete the following:

 

  • Online program application verifying their ability to pass a background check and drug test.

 

  • The application also reserves a space to participate in the skill assessment.

Top performers will be seated for interviews while low performers will be referred to a follow up career development program for a second placement opportunity.
